People born from the Mid 70's till the very early 80's are sometimes classed as Gen X but also sometimes they can be classed as gen Y!My feeling is that people born from 74-81 will never be hard gen X or hard Gen y they are sort of in between! Like with Barrack Obama born in 1961 though can be considered a baby boomer people know he is not a baby Boomer but at the same time not Gen X, people born in the mid 50's to early 60's are kind of in between also!
