I have been diagnosed by Western doctors with bipolar, and I have been meditating for 15 years. I can say with utmost certainty that meditation helps.
A few things. You probably want to start with active (rather than passive) techniques. There are techniques that allow you to move, to throw off excess energy, before sitting and going in. Try googling the words "gibberish meditation".
Also, it is probably best to work with a teacher or a group of people, rather than on your own. That way, if stuff comes up, you have a place to turn. Be sure to mention your diagnosis to your teacher/s when you begin.
Meditation is not a cure for schizophrenia. I still take meds, as well as MEDitate. But it helps.
Over time, meditating gives you space from the chattering mind. So the active mind may continue with its thoughts, but you will be able to watch them from a distance. They will not disturb you as much.

Meditation does not cure diseases, but it will help with anxiety and depression and other stress-related problems. You can experience positive effects after only one session, but in order to have long-term effects, you should meditate regularly for at least 30 minutes at a time.
The advantages of chakra-based meditation as compared to the silent meditation is that it leads to the quicker emptiness of the mind.
