If you hate cross country and that's why you want to get out of it, tell your parents that you don't want to do it anymore and why. If you have legitimate reasons, they shouldn't MAKE you do it, and can help you quit the team. If it's the middle of the season, though, you'll probably have more trouble quitting the team. Talk to the coach if you need to, because they might be able to help you enjoy cross country more. If the coach is the reason why you want to quit, maybe talking to them about how they could improve their coaching would help.
Honestly, though, it's best to just stick it out and finish the season. After this season, maybe you won't have to do cross country anymore. It's only 2 months or so of your life. I was on the soccer team in middle school and I HATED it, so I quit the team, and now I really regret it and wish I had just stuck it out for another month. I still feel like I let my team down.
My advice...if you can, finish the season, and then you don't have to run XC ever again if you don't want to. If that's not possible, talk to your parents and/or your coach (or even your principal or Dean of Students) about quitting the team. Good luck.
Let me say this: If I can survive cross country, anyone can. Cross country is a difficult sport, but there are a couple things you can do to make the season go smoothly. One thing you can do is practice in the off season. That way, when school practices start, you're ready and in better shape than you would be if you went in without working out on your own. Second, find a running partner. If you find a buddy whose pace is similar to your own, that makes workouts go a lot faster. Third, stay hydrated. Put your health above everything. It's never a pleasant experience to forfeit a race because you aren't able to finish. Finally, have fun! Try not to take it too seriously because the moment the sport stops being fun is the moment you should find a different hobby.
