The gas tank on a Volvo S40 can be opened by first pressing the release level under the driver's seat. The gas cap can then be unscrewed and removed to access the tank filler tube.
If you mean the cap, itself, push in and turn (counter-clockwise, I believe). If you mean the door, it simply pulls open, but you must have the car completely unlocked.
go to your local Volvo dealer, there is a recall or fix for that at no charge!

You can open the gas cap, on your 2005 mini Cooper, by pulling up on the gas cap lever. You can find the gas cap lever next to the drivers seat, on the left-hand side.
