Answer: the dip stick is a pain in the butt. the dipstick is actually can be accessed from underneath the car only. the car needs to be lifted and the safety panel needs to be removed to locate the transmission chamber. its is on the driver side following the left axle. On a standard 96 VW Jetta, there is no transmission dipstick. The owners manual may say non-serviceable or by VW dealership Service Only. on a standard there should be a checkplug ,when taking out there should be gearoil most likely 80w90 or similar up to the bottom of checkhole (use finger to check).if you need topup you need a to use a oilpump to get it in.going to your local VW shop should do the trick.
The transmission dipstick is located to the left of the engine on a 1996 Toyota Avalon. It is near the oil dipstick.
use the dipstick tube

To find the dipstick, look for a thin, plastic handle under the hood of the car. This is the transmission dipstick and can be used to check the fluid.
Isn't it a dipstick located towards the firewall?
towards the firewall, it is red.
Rear of engine near firewall.
how do you add transmission fluid to a 1996 vw jetta?
doesnt have one it is a sealed non serviceable unit
In the engine compartment , near the firewall , on the passenger side of the engine / transmission
The transmission fluid dipstick is located on the passenger side near the top rear of the engine. With the engine running, remove the dipstick and check the level on the stick.
If its a manual transmission: There isn't one you have to pull the plug on the transmission itself. If its a automatic transmission: Its located near the firewall on the passengers side of the engine compartment.Hope this helps!
