After the Romans left Britain in the 5th century, various Germanic tribes invaded and colonized the land. The most well-known of these were the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, who are collectively referred to as the Anglo-Saxons. They established their own kingdoms and began to assimilate with the native Celtic populations.
The word England comes from "Anglo-land", the Angles being one of the Germanic tribes to invade the island along with the Saxons and Jutes.
Among the tribes were Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Franks, Burgundians, Visigoths, Suevi, Ostrogoths, Lombards, and Vandals.
The Jutes were a Germanic people who lived in Northern Europe. They came from present day Denmark and invaded Britain in the 4th Century.
The Jutes inhabited a region north of the Angles and their settlements in England were located in Kent, the Isle of Wight, and on the mainland just north of the Solent.
Germanic peoples, the Vandals, Alans, Sueves, Alemanni and Burgundians invaded Gaul. The Angles , Saxons, Frisian and Jutes migrated to Britain in waves and took it over.
