This depends on wich engine is in the vehicle. The 1.6 and 2.0 petrol are timing chains. the 2.0 and 2.3 diesels have belts. the timing marks are as follows: 2.0 diesel: cam and injection pump marks should be at 11 o'clock. crankshaft mark at 2 o'clock with keyway at 12 o'clock. 2.3 diesel: same as 2.0 diesel. Hope this helps.
timing marks are 2 at twelve o'clock on cams, one at about 11:00 on crank and if you have secondary belt about 7:00. your sporatge may not have secondary "balancer belt."

4cylinder . two cams = 12:00. crankshaft 12:oo, and the other one 11:00. see 2000 sportage, i have answered it there several times.
If it is a gs there are little marks on the engine the left camshaft is about 11:00 and the right is about 9:00 you will see the marks if you look close enough the crank is at 12:00 there is little arrows and yellow dots on the cam sprockets The marks on the engine are like little nipples

You should have two sets of three gears for the cams, the bottom one is the drive gear and they both have 2 marks on them. On the driver side drive gear the mark closest to the center will align with the timing mark on the retainer ( about 9 o clock ) and the passenger side is at 12 o clock. The other two marks should point to 11 and 1 and align with the marks on the two upper gears. The crankshaft timing sprocket has a woodruf key and it will point at 3 oclock, a groove on the crankshaft sprocket will align with the horizontal cast mark on the drivers side of the oil pump body. The marks on the camshaft pulleys will also align with marks on the housing. The solid line on the belt will align with the two cam pulleys marks driver side at one o clock and passenger at 11 o clock
Annalaina Marks is 5' 11".
11.Temporarily tighten the timing belt tensioner pulley. Align the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft drive sprocket and engine oil pump sprocket. 12.Adjust the timing mark of the engine oil pump sprocket, by removing the cylinder block plug. Insert a bolt (M6, section width 10MM, nominal length 45MM) from the plug hole. 21.Turn the crankshaft in the clockwise direction; align each timing mark to set number one piston to TDC on the compression stroke.

if on a 98 f 150 v8 5.4 , if you put the 1st link on mark in stead of in center of 2 marks and the sproket looks at 12 and or 11 will it be out of timming
