Richard B. Spikes was an African American inventor from Sacramento, California whose patents include an automatic car wash, an automobile directional signal, and an automobile gear shift . There is a record of his patents beginning in 1910 with a beer keg tap. He continued inventing and improving machinery, and registered many patents relating to the auto industry. Spikes was born in 1884 in San Francisco. He died in 1962. Not much is known about his personal life.
