That's not a serial number but rather a part number--the part number for the whole engine. It could be any year.

The engine serial number should have two letters followed by a 6 digit number located under the alternator/generator base. Please look closer and try again.

This would be a model year 1972 through 1974 Type 1 Beetle engine.
This would be a late 1965 to early 1966 manufactured engine, 1966 model year 1300 cc engine.
Anywhere from late 1974 through late 1979. These were Type 1 or Beetle engines.
This would be model year 1972 through 1974 Type 1 Beetles with the 1600 cc engine size.
AS41 means the crankcase is made out of magnesium. They all are. You need to get the engine serial number from under the generator or alternator (on the base of the stand) to determine the year and original size.
