It requires an oil that meets the 505.01 spec. This can also be replaced with an oil meeting VW's 507.00 spec. You can purchase this oil at your local dealer. Castrol SLX is the 5w30 505.01 and VW LL3 is the 5w30 507.00 oil. Some people are having good luck with high quality 5w40 CJ-4 engine oils, such as Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck or Delvac 1, but it doesn't carry the VW rating. Also, for a 507.00 oil, some Pepboys carry Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 that carries the rating.
