Well it provides the right back pressure for the car to run well. It muffles the sound of the exhaust as well as creates an outlet for the exhaust gasses to escape. Cars don't run well on exhaust fumes so you need to get them out of the head and away from the intake as efficiently as possible. It also (on later models, Dual Ports) helps to heat the intake. In winter time your intake will freeze right below the carb this is because of the cold temps outside as well as very cold fuel hitting very cold metal. There are two small pipes that come off the intake(on Dual Port motors) that go down and meet with the exhaust, these are called the heat risers. These are what heat the intake.
The VW classic bug.
A 1965 Standard Beetle consists of 4893 parts.
Approximately 60 inches for the classic Type 1 old Beetles.
The difference is in the front. The Super had a strut front end vs. the shock towers on the standards. The spare tire also lays flat in a super. From the "A" pillar back the super and standard are the same car.

how do i get into a trunk o f a vw bug 1972
If the 71 is a standard then yes it will fit.
On a Classic Bug you don't need one. There's a spring in the middle of the hood (the one over the engine) that holds it up for you, and the trunk lid has hinges with springs in them.
