i it should be changed every 30,000 miles but mine shifts better if i change it alot sooner. but it takes dextron 2D or 2E, it seems hard to find you could prolly use multi vehicle trans fluid. Added note: I've been using Dextron III in my 1994 940 at the suggestion of the dealer. ks

∙ 15y agoVolvo says that their automatic transmission has a lifetime fluid that does not need to be changed. On the other hand, most experts recommend replacing the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles to extend transmission life and prevent premature transmission failure.
It's a sealed transmission. You'll have to take it to a Volvo dealership.
This may not be much help but I have a 1984 UK Volvo 240 dl which I changed the fluid on some years ago. As I recall it was simply a case of undoing a drain plug on the transmission casing and refilling after undoing another nut physically higher up the casing.
The transmission fluid on a Volvo 850 is added to the filler tube. This is accessed by removing the dipstick and inserting a funnel.
Aeration.
On the 2007 XC90 -- There is no transmission dipstick !!
