The 2000 S500 has two separate climate controls at the center console, one for the dirver and one for the passenger. Set the desired temperatures -- ideally to a level below the ambient temperature, or the a/c will not engage. Make sure the the "Econ" LED is not lit (press the "Econ" button until it goes out). When the "Econ" light is on, the air conditioner is disabled, the fan is blowing only outside air.
If you turn on this mode, your airconditioner will turn on the max settings.
To reset the service light on a Mercedes-Benz M Class, disconnect the positive cable on the battery for a few minutes. If this does not do the trick, turn the key on and pump the gas three times then turn the key off. Start the vehicle. The light should be off.

Turn the key to the accesory position, find the button on your instrument cluster on the left. push that button 2 times within four seconds of the key being on. turn the key off then back on and push that button and hold it. your maintenance lights will reset. i just did this on my 2000 slk 230. there are also how to videos on you tube. its very easy.
