There are three bolts which fasten the starter to the engine, to get to them you will first need to disconnect and remove the battery and its box, remove the clips and move the two large coolant hoses, found on the left of the battery box, to one side (you'll need to drain the coolant out and save it for replacement later). I also disconnected the overflow from the plastic coolant reservoir along with the hose from the bottom of the reservoir. Next I found it necessary to remove the clip securing the large diameter rubber hose to the metal tube coming from the turbo and tie the tube back out of the way. Then disconnect the large plastic air duct which connects to the bottom of the EGR valve, and push it to the left out of the way. Disconnect the electrical plug from the EGR valve.

You should now be able to access and undo the two electrical fasteners on the solenoid which is mounted to the top of the starter and by pushing the disconnected hoses and cable harness out of the way. At last you can now undo the three bolts holding the starter motor. The starter can be turned and twisted upwards for removal past the EGR valve. This is a very tight space but it can be done with a little patience, I've just finished replacing mine today. Replacement is just the same procedure in reverse.
