Remove the oil sump cover (4 screws) from underneath the car and then the drain plug. Then use a 32mm spanner to remove the oil filter (located above the alternator), but first put a plastic bag over the alternator as dripping oil can run it. The paper filter element just pulls off the housing cover. You should get a new copper washer for the drain plug and a rubber ring for the filter housing included when you buy a new filter. The BMW garage sells 0W 30 oil for this car but Halford lists 5w 30 which is a fair bit cheaper. It also sells 5w 30 oil as recommended for Vauxhall and this is cheaper again but I could see any difference in spec - anyone know? Expect to pay about £33 for 5 litres n Halfords....BMW might be cheaper....then pigs might fly. Remember to take the plastic bag off the alternatoer before starting.

Use synthetic, change it and the filter every 5000mi. I have over 220,000 miles on mine by following that rule.
It is usually located in the main engine bay close to the oil filler.
Were is the oil filter for a 2005 bmw
The best oil is 10w-40 full syn. If you go by the oil change indicator lights, use full synthetic. If you change it at half the interval, regular oil is okay, but I still recommend full synthetic. It should have a rating of ACEA-A3 rated.
Suitable oils: 1) BMW Synthetic Oil (typically 5W-30) 2) Mobil 1 0W-40 3) Castrol Syntec 0W-30
I contacted the BMW dealership and they told me that this model year can only be reset with a computer system hooked up to the car.
there is no dipstick. level is checked via a removable plug on the transmission.
