It can, but your engine will not run properly. My advice would be to put the sensor in between the air filter and the throttle body. This is straight from wikipedia:

Air flow meter in cars

An air flow meter is used in some cars to measure the quantity of air going to the engine. In the case of a gasoline engine the electronic control unit then calculates how much fuel is needed to inject into the cylinder ports.

The vane (flap) type air flow meters (Bosch L-Jetronic and early Motronic EFI systems or Hitachi) actually measure air volume, whereas the later "hot wire" and "hot film" air flow meters measure speed of air flow.

Ive installed a cold air intake in your car and now when it idles it gets really hot is there something wrong or is this normal?

No this is not normal. The cold air intake will not cause overheating. I would say you have disconnected the fan thermo relay, or the fans themselves, when installing the cold air intake. Check all the connections and the fuse. Turn on the A/C and see if the fans are running. They should run continuously with the A/C on.

WHERE IS cold air intake?

A cold air intake is an aftermarket part used to help open air flow to the engine. The cold air intake sucks up cold air from underneath the car and is attached to your intake manifold. So it is a pipe going from somewhere close to the bottom of the engine compartment leading to your intake manifold.
