A well-balanced dish is a dish with all the essential nutrients in the correct proportion unlike a meal which consists of many dishes of food. A well-balanced dish consists of the same amount nutrients present in a well-balanced meal.

If we do not have enough time to cook a meal, we can cook a dish for it is faster and simpler. However, if we want to cook a dish, we have to make sure that we have all the essential nutrients present in the dish itself.

An example of a well-balanced dish is a plate of spaghetti.

Nutrients are chemicals that an organism needs to live and grow or a substance used in an organism's metabolism which must be taken in from its environment. Nutrients are the substances that enrich the body. They build and repair tissues, give heat and energy, and regulate body processes. Methods for nutrient intake vary, with animals consuming foods that are digested by an internal digestive system, but most plants ingest nutrients directly from the soil through their roots or from the atmosphere. Some plants, like carnivorous plants, externally digest nutrients from animals, before ingesting them. The effects of nutrients are dose-dependent.

Organic nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, proteins (or their building blocks, amino acids), and vitamins. Inorganic chemical compounds such as dietary minerals, water, and oxygen may also be considered nutrients. A nutrient is essential to an organism if it cannot be synthesized by the organism in sufficient quantities and must be obtained from an external source. Nutrients needed in large quantities are called macronutrients; micronutrients are required in only small quantities.

The essential nutrients must be in the correct proportion lest we get insufficient nutrients or an overdose of it. To know whether our meal is well-balanced is by eating the correct servings of food and getting the right amount of nutrients according to the food pyramid.
