Have you ever smelled something and knew you had smelled it somewhere before but you just don't know where? That happened to me one summer day when I was walking into a new hair supplies store. As I walked in, I was overwhelmed by a strong smell that consisted of hairspray and makeup. I knew I had smelled this somewhere before, but I didn't know when. I wanted to stop and think, and I did exactly that.
I took a whiff of the air, letting the sweet smell surround me. I could feel the gears in my head turning round and round. It was on the tip of my tongue, in the back of my mind. I knew it! I knew it! I finally remembered, it was from my spectacular performances for dance.
The company I danced for would always hold a production at the Civic Center. Backstage there was a small room called "The Green Room". There, we would all get ready and it always had that one dancer smell. The smell I was taking in right at this very moment. Everyone was using hairspray and makeup, filling the room with the familiar smell.
As I thought about it more I remembered more. My friends and I would go out into the hallway and play, spreading the smell around the whole place. Those were terrific times. As a result, I had suddenly felt bad that I quit dancing. Oddly, I was happy at the same time because I got to take in this beautiful smell once again.
To sum up, I had relived something great that day. It was all because of that one smell. The same smell I will never, ever forget. Now every time I sniff a bit of hairspray and makeup it brings back that vivid memory. As Anne Mary Robertson Moses once said, "A strange thing is memory, and hope; one looks backward, and the other forward; one is of today, the other of tomorrow. Memory is history recorded in our brain, memory is a painter, it paints pictures of the past and of the day."
