Literature is a beautiful and complex artistic expression. In ancient times, people would use symbols and pictures to portray a moment in time. Writing, however, gave us a way to convey not only documented history, but the feelings that went along with those moments. You can draw a picture of someone crying, but with words and writing, you can paint a mental picture of it. Why are they crying? Who else is involved in their story? How does it end? What's going on around them? From there, humans have taken things a step farther; we have continued to write, but not just about facts and history, but of made up places and people. Literature is not only an outlet from everyday life, but it's a reflection of the writer's thoughts and outlooks on the human condition.

Basically, I believe literature is important because there's no such thing as "appreciating too many different outlooks on life". This doesn't mean you have to agree with everything every writer says, but I like to think that for every book you read, you open your mind that much more to new ideas and concepts.

Having studied literature, I believe it is because the breadth and depth of general knowledge you will need to understand literary allusions (references), as well as the intellectual openness you will need to accept the perspective of the authors, opens your mind to another world. Literature abounds with metaphors, using them as a lens to teach the reader to look beyond the obvious and to question issues and paradigms maturely. It also presents alternate, sometimes even radical perspectives, so that the reader develops a sophisticated point of view. All of that, more, and yet still packaged into one eloquent flight of fancy!

In other words, literature makes you a better, wiser (not just smarter!) person.
