The book is simply Pearson's remembered history (like an oral history or diary) of the life and times of Toronto, when he lived there in the 1800's. In the book, Pearson walks through all the streets of Toronto and recalls who lived where and recites he local rumors. On less than 2 pages (in a 420 page book) Pearson mentions James Mink living on Adelaide Street. Me mentions Mink ran a livery stable next to the post office, and kept a hotel. Pearson recalls that Mink was a "black man" with a "violent temper", and his daughter was "very black'. Pearson makes no mention of any wife, white or otherwise, as depicted in the movie. Pearson recalls that Mink married his daughter off to a "white man" to whom he paid a "considerable sum of money" for marrying his daughter. The husband then took her on a trip to South Carolina and sold her -- also for a "considerable sum of money". Mink found out about the sale and "took immediate steps to repurchase her and brought her back to Toronto". End of story. The movie, a dramatic fiction, stretches much longer than the very very short facts.
James Mink, a former slave, was indeed a wealthy, black businessman in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was even said to have been the wealthiest black businessman in Toronto in the 1850's. Records show that his wife was not white, but a fellow black person. There is also no historical proof that he had a daughter named Mary or that a daughter of his was sold back into slavery. And James' involvement in politics never occurred as far as records show, but it was actually his brother, George, who was asked to run for Alderman in 1850. It was still an inspiring and moving film, to be sure.

Depends on type of polecat or mink you use. American Mink vs European Polecat: Mink for sure, it's larger and more aggressive. Not to mention, being an invasive species to the U.K. (where I live). The mink is also a swimmer, meaning if it took place in water, the mink trumps it. The mink is also considerably more slender, despite it's size advantage. European Polecat vs European Mink: This could go either way, I'm slightly leaning towards the mink though, again, because of it's possible agility because of it's slenderness. American Mink vs Steppe Polecat: This could go either way, again, but I'm slightly leaning towards the Polecat. It should be larger and heavier. European Mink vs Steppe Polecat: Polecat wins. It's larger, heavier and more powerful.
