A storyboard is a picture that is animatedly drawn or a 3 dimensional that tells the story of what you are trying to tell. Story boards are often used in media planning. Movie makers, television shows and advertising use a story board in the first steps of production and in sales pitches. They lay out the flow of the story with rough sketches, usually one or two frames for each key part of the story. It gives the persons they are selling the production to an idea of the story in a visual form, rather than having to give them a script.
A storyboard is a visual script made up of sequential drawings like a comic book. This allows a director to choreograph camerawork, to efficiently schedule actors and other members of cast and crew, not to mention work out how to pace the telling of the story. It is drawn (usually) by an illustrator from the completed script and greatly increases efficiency/brings down production costs by virtually eliminating waste.
A storyboard is a series of drawings used to plan shots in advance. Basically, it looks like a big comic strip. Storyboards may be needed for complex scenes, such as actions sequences. Also, animated movies and TV shows are storyboarded since the cost of animation makes it impractical to do a "second take".
