A complication is a difficulty or obstacle that arises in a previously normal, average, or good situation. These can range from minor to very serious. Friends might "complicate" their relationship by suddenly developing feelings for each other--minor. Complications in big medical surgeries, on the other hand, can result in death--major.

ummm the answer above me isn't quite right lol..... anyway a complication is a struggle between a character and a specific problem. It is normally used in narrative work. However in real life its not much different :) anyway that's the best i can do anyone else feel free to add.

The event that initiates the conflict is the complicating incident or complications. =)
