The membership of Mensa is drawn from persons with an I.Q. in the 98th percentile of all scores, as determined by standardized intelligence tests. There are separate controlling national organizations under the umbrella of Mensa International.

If you are referring to the Mensa International organization, "mensa" is not an acryonm. It is a word taken from two Latin words: : mēns, which means "mind"; and mēnsa, which means "table" -- the concept that the organization is a round-table society of minds.

The organization is was established as a free of social distinctions: class, race, politics, religion, etc., and has no ideological or philosophical premise. Its members represent many points of view. The organization's logo was chosen to demonstrate the round-table nature of the organization; the coming together of equals.
