Deconcentration is the delegation of supervised and controlled administrative powers to other unit[s] of government. Under deconcentration, authority is usually delegated to field agency[s] of units of government and or of the same department or ministry. for example the deconcentration of Corporate Affairs Commission, Commerce & industry as well as JAMB, WAEC and Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority.

However the British colonial Administration in Nigeria was a form of deconcentration. the colonialist demarcated Nigeria into large units called Provinces, each province was headed by a Resident. there was a provincial Headquarters with Offices, equipment, and staff for providing essential services; the province were further sub-divided into Divisions, and each Division was headed by a Divisional Officer [D O]. The function of a D.O was both administrative and judicial.
