Keep the kids occupied in some activity that is doable and then give constructive feed-back. Don't expect them to sit quietly while you lecture, they have to have someting to do. Pick a short topic and then get them doing something related to it. For example Essay Writing. Don't tell them to write an essay on anything they want to. Teach them the basic components of an essay, get them to analyse a short example, and try to include everybody, not just your pets. Don't be critical, don't mock them. Then get them to make an outline of an essay. (First paragraph with thesis topic and thesis sentence, evidence in point form, brief conclusion) Again try to get work from everybody, be supportive and encouraging. Do this all in class - homework is for the mature few. If somebody does something acknowledge it. If the kids percieve that there is no reward for effort made they will dump the idea.
