For the Iliad, there are two incomplete medieval manuscripts from the 9th century CE. There are two more or less complete manuscripts from the 10th century. One is known as Venetus A and is housed in the Marcian Library in Venice. The other is housed in Florence, in the Laurentian Library. After the 10th century, the manuscripts become more numerous. In all, there are about 190 from the medieval and renaissance periods. There are also papyrus fragments from antiquity, some of them fairly extensive, but none of them nearly complete, found mainly in Egypt. The earliest date from the 3rd century BCE but most are from later periods, down to the 7th century CE. About 1500 are known, but many if not most have a very small amount of text. The story for the Odyssey is similar, but there are fewer medieval manuscripts and fewer papyrus fragments.
