There are two separate terms, but they are related.

The word "capital" refers to money (or as an adjective to mean primary or important). It also means the city which serves as the seat of government of a state or country.

The word "capitol" refers ONLY TO A BUILDING that houses the seat of government. For example, the state capitol in Louisiana, the old one first finished in 1852, or the new one built in 1932.

If you are talking about a state, or country, it is spelled with an o. If you are talking about a capital letter, it is spelled with an a.
