The word "capital" refers to money (or as an adjective to mean primary or important). It also means the city which serves as the seat of government of a state or country.
The word "capitol" refers ONLY TO A BUILDING that houses the seat of government. For example, the state capitol in Louisiana, the old one first finished in 1852, or the new one built in 1932.
