The theme can be difficult to determine as some writers are very tricky about how they present it. Some are even proud at how obscure they can make it.
What the theme is, is some 'message' that the writer is trying to communicate to the reader. In some stories the writer comes right out and just says it. In Jane Austin's 'Pride and Predudice' she states in the very first sentence what the theme of the story is. In Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Cask of the Amarillo' the reader is left to discern by incremental deduction.
Describe the surroundings and how the character feels. Say your story was to be a fairy tale you could do something like this:
I'm so sick of being a Queen. Having to sit in this castle pretending every things okay is like torture for me. I stare out the wooden window panes down towards the draw bridge where my mother was greeting one of our many guests here at Cesar Castle. I see children come out of the limousine Maybe i have some hope to have fun with other children for once. I race down the concrete stairs with my maid following.
Hope I could help, Good luck!
