The earliest surviving work of literature in the English language is a poem attributed by Bede to the poet Caedmon. It appears in Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People and dates from the 7th Century CE/AD.
Before that there were works written in Britain but in Latin. There may also have been older works in English that are now lost.
The Age of Enlightenment occurred mainly in the 18th century in most of Europe as well as the American colonies. It is a period of time marked by significant advances in all areas of academia. These advances arose largely as a result of the Age of Enlightenment's particular set of principles which value the use of reason and critical thought in examining traditional rules and institutions that up until that point had been accepted with out question.
Literature of the Enlightenment Period is generally any literature written during this era.
Anglo-American literature refers to works written by Americans in the English language. Beginning with the adventure yarns and religious guides written by English colonists and continuing throughout the centuries, American literature has been amazingly rich and diverse, contributing abundantly to English speaking literature and verse.

Often, literature is related to history in setting, as with historical fiction. Literature is also frequently bassed on history, as the ideals and themes presented in works of literature are impacted by the history of the culture that produced them.
History consists of descriptions of the past in direct, unadorned language, though simile and metaphor may be used. In literature, the imaginative spirit plays a dominant role, though an historical novel is usually loosely based on facts.
