Explain the difference between rising-falling intonations with examples?

Intonation is the musical pitch of a word or phase. In English, a rising intonation is usually used at the end of spoken questions, such as "This is the boat?"while a falling intonation suggests a conclusion such a "This is the boat."

Well, when you're cake won't rise, rising intonation is perfect. Yeast doesn't always work, because it's expensive and can make your cake lose flavour. I recommend Walmart's Rising Intonation for all of your cake rising needs.

This is quite difficult to note in literature, unless the reader is told that a character has a rising or falling intonation.

One good, contemporary example of this is in Ian McEwan's Enduring Love (the book, rather than film, for this!). The character of Jed has what could be seen as a typically 1990's intonation, that rises at the end of each sentence, suggesting a questioning tone.

The function of this as our narrator, Joe, points out is that it gives the impression that every statement is not in fact stated. It's (as I recall) to do with a lack of belief in what one is saying, so presenting statements as questions makes that one cannot be pinned down as having stated something as their opinion, if they are challenged - a get-out clause.

I haven't got anything on falling intonations however, sorry! Hope this helps
