Functional Fixedness is the tendency for one to perceive an item only in terms of its common use. For example, people typically see a pen as only used for writing. A pen could also be used to pull ones hair into a bun. Another example is popcorn, besides its tradition use as food, popcorn coudl be used to fill a box to put a vase in to protect the vase from breaking. If one can escape functional fixedness s/he will be a better problem sovler.

What is the difference between a mental set and functional fixedness?

A mental set is a tendency to approach a problem in a certain way based on past experiences, which can sometimes lead to difficulty in finding alternative solutions. Functional fixedness is the tendency to only see objects for their typical or intended use, limiting the ability to think of creative or unconventional uses for them. Both concepts can hinder problem-solving by restricting thinking patterns.
