A diode allows electrons to pass only in one direction. During the negative half cycle of an alternating current the diode will not allow electron current to pass. It is like a one way valve. This property of diode enables it to convert AC into pulsated DC

A diode conducts in only one direction, where the anode is more positive than the cathode. As such, a diode can be used to convert AC to pulsating DC, for subsequent filtering and regulation to produce stable DC.

A diode will block one half of the sine wave of an AC circuit. Depending on which way it is inserted into the circuit it will block either positive or negative half of the wave. When only one diode is used it is called pulsating DC. This is caused by the fact that there is no current flow when the diode is not conducting during one half of the cycle.
