Electrolytic capacitor are used in dc power supplies to filter ac ripple .

The rectifier turns ac in to pulsating dc and with a capacitor across the output it holds a charge and so pulsating dc never goes down to zero..

An electrolytic capacitor acts as a charge reservoir in most circuits. In power supplies it provides a low-impedance source of current when there is a sudden increased demand, or is used to reduce ripple voltage. Minimizing ripple voltage in the power supply is of great importance in analog electronic circuits, such as audio amplifiers, because the ripple can be heard in the sound signal as an annoying "hum".

Electrolytic capacitors can also be used as timing elements in conjunction with a resistor network, producing time delay signals or pulse trains of a given frequency. The popular 555 family of integrated circuit timers can use them in this fashion.

The same thing as any other capacitor does (i.e. oppose changes in the voltage across it) except:

  • it has much greater capacitance per volume than other capacitors
  • has higher leakage current than other capacitors
  • is polarized when all other capacitors are unpolarized

Does 001 farad of capacitor have polarity?

Only electrolytic capacitors (tantalum capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitor) are polarized.0.001 farad = 1000 microfaradThis is a value that is too large for any practical capacitor except an electrolytic, so yes it will be polarized.

Why is it important consider the correct polarity of an electrolytic capacitor when using it in the circuit?

The electrolytic capacitor can only have voltage across it in one direction. Failure to comply will result in catastrophic destruction of the capacitor.

What are types of capacitor?

Electrolytic capacitors are capacitors in which one or both of the plates is a non-metallic conductive surface, or in other words, an electrolyte. Electrolytic capacitors come in a variety of types including: aluminum electrolytic capacitor; tantalum; and a solid aluminum electrolytic capacitor with organic semiconductor electrolyte or OS-CON.
