  • a thermistor is a temperature sensitive resistor - to measure temperature you must measure its resistance and convert that resistance to equivalent temperature
  • a thermocouple is a temperature sensitive voltage source(i.e. battery) - to measure temperature you must measure the voltage across it and a reference thermocouple at a known constant temperature connected in series with it and convert that voltage to equivalent temperature
Note: Thermistors do not require reference thermistors, thermocouples do require reference thermocouples at a known constant temperature. Thermocouples are more linear than thermistors, making them easier to read accurately. Thermocouples are available that are far more sensitive to small changes in temperature than thermistors.

What is used in digital thermometer?

Thermistor digitals generally have "built in" probes and sensors. They must be calibrated during the manufacturing process and so are not interchangeable. Thermocouple digitals, with some exceptions, can accept any matching category of probe (the two most common are K-type and T-type--these have different temperature ranges). We concentrate on K-type only, since this type spans all food application temperatures, and has more availability of probe options. Accuracy can be very good with both types, but thermistor digitals are limited to the type of built-in probe they come with, and if the probe breaks, you have to buy a new thermometer. Thermocouple digital thermometers are generally very predictable in their quality, and the response characteristics of their fitted probes is within a very narrow range. All QA stocks the highest quality thermocouple digital thermometers, so they can be used with high confidence. Thermistor digitals are made worldwide, and can have variable quality, if not carefully checked. All QA performs checks of all of their thermistor-based products to ensure that their customers are getting products of excellent quality. Our line of thermistor products represents the very best available at the price.

What does the thermistor do?

the THERMORECEPTOR responds to changes in the temperature

What is working principle of thermocouple?

A thermocouple is two different metals in contact with each other that generate a voltage when heated.

What is a copper-constantan thermocouple?

A thermocouple is a temperature sensor made from two different types of metal. Different metal types give different sensing properties and ranges. Several standard pairs of metals are defined in industry and designated by a letter. A copper-constantan thermocouple is "Type T."

Difference between thermistor and temperature sensor?

A thermistor is a temperature measuring device which acts like a temperature sensitive resistor. It is an active device that requires a current flow to measure its resistance so that the temperature may be calculated and/or displayed. A thermocouple is a device composed of two dissimilar metals fused together. An electrical potential occurs across the junction of the metals. As the potential is influenced by the temperature of the metal junction the output voltage can be measured and calibrated to show the temperature at the joint. Both devices may be employed to measure the temperature within a fixed space, or on a probe to measure the temperature at a remote point or points.

5 different things that the temperature can be measured?

Temperature can be measured using a thermometer, infrared thermometer, thermocouple, thermistor, or a temperature probe.

Does an electric heater do the opposite of a thermocouple?

No, an electric heater and a thermocouple serve different functions. An electric heater generates heat through electrical resistance, while a thermocouple detects temperature changes and generates electrical signals based on those changes. They work in different ways to either produce heat (electric heater) or measure temperature (thermocouple).
