Original use was in the 50's when a stove and dryer was installed but the service could not handle both. The load shedder would automatically turn off one of the appliances so the other could run.
Industrial shedding could be multiple air compressors. As the pressure in one is close to minimum, another would be stopped to allow the low one to start.
Allowing more machinery to be connected to a service than it could handle without load shedding.
Disadvantage is that the shedded load may be necessary.
