A lot of people built the Canal. The one who gets most of the credit is George Washington Goethals. Goethals directed the job of building the Canal.
The French started building the canal but stopped because of malaria. Then the United States took over.
Walter Reed proved that malaria was spread by mosquitoes and that by getting rid of mosquitoes they could get rid of malaria in that area. The United States got rid of all standing water in the area and got rid of the mosquitoes. It cleaned out the malaria.
After that the United States built the canal.
It took ten years under the US Army Corps of Engineers- from l904-l9l4- with some head starts using surplus equipment and (digs) from the French. The COE men did not start from scratch, as they took up where the French left off, and the French had done considerable work. Eiffel, he of tower fame, designed locks for the French Canal; it is not known if these designs were taken up by the U.S.
