Crank lengths are used because the moments at the edge strips are negative while that at mid span are positive so reinforcement are alternatively provided at the top and bottom respectively..

so just to have connection between the reinforcement

and for the slab to behave as a single unit by providing continuous bars, cranking is done in slabs..
