How did Boeing get its name?

It was founded by William Boeing. He was born in the US and named for his father, a wealthy Swiss engineer who Americanized his name from Wilhelm Böing after emigrating. (" ö " is normally transliterated as "oe" in typefaces and languages that don't support umlauts)

Tidbit: during the design phase of Boeing Corp.'s first passenger jet the numbers sin(45º) and cos(45º) were very frequently used in calculations. The value is approximately 0.7070 and the plane's designation as model 707 derived from that.
