Transformers change voltage and current from the primary side to the secondary side, while keeping the power in equal to the power out (minus losses). Any transformer will increase the voltage applied to the secondary (or low voltage side) to the primary (or higher voltage side).

A transformer uses induction from one coil (primary), to the other coil (secondary). Alternating Current in a conductor will produce a magnetic field around the conductor. This magnetic field will expand and contract as the current alternates, the lines of flux will pass through the windings of the secondary coil inducing voltage into the secondary coil. If the turns ratio of the two coils was 2:1 and you applied 480 volts to the primary, you would get 240 volts out the secondary. If the turns ratio of the two coils was 1:2 and you applied 240 volts to the primary, you would get 480 volts out the secondary.

Usually a transformer is a device that takes a high voltage cable and distributes it into several lower voltage cables. So, some transformers decrease voltage, others increase voltage.

Manh of the power adapters which plug into a wall outlet have transformers which lower the voltage.

There are transformers which don't change the voltage. The value of output voltage is the same as the input voltage. They are isolating transformers.

A transformer can do either function. A step up transformer will raise the voltage from a lower value to a higher voltage value. Likewise a step down transformer will lower the voltage from a higher voltage to a lower voltage value.

Transformer work on induction principle . when we energies the one coil (say primary) and due to induction our second coil get energies .

hence voltage send one coil to another, and we known that induced voltage depend upon number of turns (say N)

N1= no. of turn primary coil

N2= no. of turn secondary coil.

hence by changing these no. of turn we can adjust of voltage ..

hence transformer work as step Up or Step Down for voltages .

the transformer voltage can be increased simply by connecting the stepup transformer in series to it. the stepup transformer is nothing but its secondary windings should be more when compared to its primary windings.

The metaphor of stepping down is that you are going to a lower level of voltage. So no, a step down transformer does not increase voltage, it decreases it.

Can 24v 40va be used for24v 1 amp?

Yes, a 24V 40VA transformer can be used for a device that requires 24V 1A. The VA rating (volt-ampere) is a measure of the overall capacity of the transformer to deliver power, so the 40VA transformer has the capacity to supply the 1A required by the device.

A transformer is a device used to increase or decrease dc voltage?

The answer below this is not correct, a transformer can only be used on AC not DC. So the statement, "A transformer is a device used to increase or decrease DC voltage" is false The above comment relates to an entry which was obviously deleted. However, the above comment is also false. The ignition coil in of a petrol engine is a transformer, a pulse transformer.
