The soft fur, like that of many other animals, is used in expensive coats and hats. The trade in panda fur has been severely restricted in Hong Kong since the start of reversion to Chinese control. The removal of local human inhabitants from the panda preserve areas (beginning in the 1990's) has greatly reduced hunting in their habitats. (In the late 1980's, poachers were imprisoned or executed.)
The Himalayan red panda was similarly hunted for its tail, used for fur hats.
