The current in the secondary side of a CT (Current Transformer) is induced by the current flowing in the primary circuit. If the current continues to flow in the primary circuit and the CT is left "Open Circuit" then dangerous voltages can build up and cause damage to equipment when reconnected or personal injury by electric shock.

Therefore, shorting the secondary terminals of the CT allows current to circulate taking flux with, thus reducing the building up of flux; the higher the flux the higher the emf (voltage) induced; E = Blv.

What is the xo connection in a transformer for?

The X terminal identification on a transformer designates the secondary side of the transformer. Depending on the type of secondary windings, the terminals can be designated as X1, X2, X3 and X4. On a single winding secondary the terminals will be X1 and X2. The "hot" wire will be supplied from the X1 terminal and the return wire will use the X2 terminal. On most control transformers the X2 terminal should be grounded to the control panel's chassis.

What is the use of wire terminal?

A wire terminal is used in electrical wiring. It is used to hold the wires when wiring switches and receptacles. There are different types of terminals including screw terminals.

How can you use a 3 phase capacitor as a single phase capacitor?

Just use any two of the three terminals that are available, this will give you a single phase capacitor.

Why would an electrical relay hum?

The reason the relay humms or buzzes is that the pole faces on the relay are not aligning properly. This could be a result of the relay being out in the weather and developing a coat of rust on it. If the relay stops the noise when given a tap on its side then that is the cause. The other cause could be from a broken shorted turn. The use of laminations in an ac relay reduces the heating due to eddy currents. In addition, a copper strap or ring (called a shorted turn) is placed near the end of the pole piece of an ac relay to reduce chatter during operation. Because the ac is going through a peak, dropping to zero, going through a peak in the opposite direction, and then dropping to zero again during each complete cycle, the coil tends to release the armature each time the current drops to zero and attracts the armature each time it reaches a peak. The shorted turn acts as the secondary of a transformer, the primary of which is the relay operating coil. The current in the shorted turn is out of phase with the current of the operating coil because the copper ring has low-inductive reactance. Thus, when the operating coil flux is zero, the flux produced by the shorted coil is different from zero, and the tendency of the relay to chatter is reduced.

How does emergency light switch work?

An emergency light switch uses a relay. A relay has an 5 terminals. The firs two terminals are connected to a flowing current (current flows when there is a normal electricity) The next 3 terminals are the common, the normally on, and normally off. One of the battery terminal is connected to the common, and the other one terminal of the battery is connected to one terminal of the light bulb(which has two terminals) then the other terminal of the light bulb is connected to the normally on terminal of the relay. When current flows to the first two mentioned terminals of the relay, the circuit of the battery and light is cut off or not connected. But when the current is off, this will switch on the normally-on terminal thus current will flow from the battery to the light bulb, that will shed light. ;) on an emergency situation. note: The normally off is not use. And may be use for some purpose.
