Well, darling, Nikola Tesla didn't actually invent the neon lamp. It was invented by French engineer Georges Claude in 1910. So, Tesla may have been a brilliant mind, but let's give credit where credit is due.
In an incandescent lamp, it is called a filament. It is usually made out of Tungsten. The resistance in the filament causes it to heat up, and then glow. In a neon lamp it is plasma, which is an ionized gas. In a fluorescent bulb mercury vapor is ionized to produce UV radiation, that hits the phosphor coating on the outside of the bulb and that glows.
The Line Tester or Neon Screwdriver is tools specified for electrical works, though we can use it as Screwdriver in special case. The Line Tester is one of the important tools of electrician. The Line Tester should be a tool of home ‘Tool Box’.Before we learn about the Line Tester we must learn about some common terms and get some basic knowledge of electricity. All Electrical device and appliance use maximum three wires and minimum two wires for electric supply. These wires differ from one another and denoted by specific namesoPhase Wire:This wire is also called as “Live Wire” or “Hot Wire”.oNeutral Wire:This wire is also called as “Cold Wire”oEarth Wire:This wire is used for safety purpose. The Phase Wire in alternating current supply is very important and dangerous. This wire is also called Live or Hot because it has higher potential difference from Neutral or Earth wire. When two different potential wires come in contact current flows in the circuit. The potential difference between two wires or terminals is called ‘Voltage’. In India the potential difference between Phase and Neutral is specified as 220 Volt. While the difference between Neutral and Earth is about 5Volt.Construction of Line Tester or Neon Screwdriver:The Line Tester is tool used to identify the Phase or Live Wire. The main parts of a Line Tester are shown in diagram.1.Metallic Rod:This cylindrical metallic rod is designed as Flat Screwdriver on one end while the other end and major portion of rod remains covered inside the Insulated Transparent Body.2.Resistance:The Resistance is a device which prevents the flow of electric current through it. The resistance of Line Tester reduces the flow of current through it. This resistance makes the tester a safe tool. One end of resistance gets connected with cylindrical metallic rod and another gets connected with the neon lamp.3.Neon Lamp:The Neon lamp is most important part of Line Tester; due to the neon lamp the line tester is also called Neon Screwdriver. The neon lamp is very similar to torch lamp or bulb. One terminal of neon lamp gets connected with Resistance and another terminal gets connected with metallic spring.4.Metallic Spring:The Metallic Spring is used to make connection between Neon lamp and metallic touch screw.5.Metallic Touch Screw:The metallic touch screw is a part of Line Tester which is used to tight all the above components inside the Insulated transparent plastic body and contact with metallic spring connected with Neon Lamp. The outer body of Line tester is made of transparent hard Plastic.Working of Line Tester:When the Screwdriver end of Line Tester comes in contact with the Live/ Hot wire and we touches the rear metallic touch screw a circuit gets completed and the current moves through metallic rod.The metallic rod is connected with a resistance the electric current passes through the resistance. Due to the resistance the great amount of electric current drops and a small amount of electric current passes through it to the next component, viz Neon Lamp and reaches till the metallic touch screw which is in contact of our finger.A small current passes through our body to earth and complete the circuit. As the circuit gets completed a current starts flowing and the filament of Neon lamp starts glowing. This indicates that the Phase of electric supply is present in the touched wire.It is advice to work with electricity only in presence of adult; who has good knowledge to deal with electricity; and take all necessary measures for safe handling of electricity. Never! Never try to work on electricity without proper guidance and care.Precautions:When ever you use a line tester take some precautionsEnsure that the tester is working properly.Ensure that the tester is not broken.Don’t touches the open wire even tester shows absence of phase or hot supply.Never try to test the presence of phase or hot wire of any high voltage supply source the flow of current can be lethal
Neon
The kilovolt indicator circuit I saw on the web uses resistors voltage divider with a neon lamp in parallel with each resistor of the low branch. It's not a very orthodox design. If you search electric fence tester on a browser by images you can look at the schematic. But beware, you must not connect this circuit for a long time ! It is better to use high voltage resistors (several kilovolts) with enough power. Be careful with high voltage because you don't need to touch a contact to be in danger, if you' re close enough a spark will jump the air gap. In a home 230v indicator, there is one resistor in serie with the neon bulb, the resistor value is calculated to have the difference between input high voltage and nominal voltage of the neon bulb. The voltage across a single neon bulb depends on the size of the bulb, in fact distance between the electrodes and parameters of the gas. For 2 chinese models I saw 16x6mm: 90volts, 12x5mm: 60volts for instance. You can buy the neon bulb with mounted resistor. It is not necessary to use neon bulb to measure high voltage: You can use a voltage divider and a digital voltmeter, it would be much more precise. If you want to test AC voltage, you can use a high voltage transformer but the wires must be insulated enough to withstand the high voltage.
Neon
The neon lamp was invented by Georges Claude in 1910. Claude was a French engineer and inventor who first demonstrated neon lighting at the Paris Motor Show in 1910. Neon lamps quickly became popular for their colorful and eye-catching glow.
No, Nikola Tesla did not invent neon lights. Neon lights were actually invented by French engineer Georges Claude in 1910. However, Tesla did make significant contributions to the development of alternating current (AC) electrical systems and numerous other inventions in the field of electrical engineering.
George Claude invented the neon lamp in Paris, France in 1910. He developed a method to mass-produce neon lights, which were then used for commercial signage and lighting.
He created AC, alternating current. The source of electricity that the world uses today. He also invented neon, fluorescent lights, radio, X-ray, radar and so much more. The Star Wars project from the Reagan era was that of Nikola Tesla as well. HAARP in Alaska is also a product of Tesla.
After a difficult period, during which Tesla invented but lost his rights to an arc-lighting system, he established his own laboratory in New York City in 1887, where his inventive mind could be given free rein. He experimented with shadowgraphs similar to those that later were to be used by Wilhelm Röntgen when he discovered X-rays in 1895. Tesla's countless experiments included work on a carbon button lamp, on the power of electrical resonance, and on various types of lighting. Tesla gave exhibitions in his laboratory in which he lighted lamps without wires by allowing electricity to flow through his body, to allay fears of alternating current. He was often invited to lecture at home and abroad.
The inventions of Nikola Tesla are significant to mankind. He discovered Radiant Energy in 1889. He also invented AC electricity, Neon Lights, Radio transmission, The Electric motor, Wireless electricity transfer, Remote control, Hydraulics, Lasers, Space weapons, Robotics, and many, many more things.
Yes. A neon lamp contains neon.
Nikola Tesla was an inventor and electrical engineer who made significant contributions to the development of technology. He is best known for his work in developing the alternating current (AC) electrical system, which is widely used for transmitting electricity today. Tesla also made advancements in wireless communication and wireless power transfer technology.

French engineer and chemist Georges Claude first produced a neon lamp in 1910. He commercialized it in 1913 and the neon lamp quickly became popular for advertising and lighting applications due to its bright, colorful illumination.
The color of light given off by a neon lamp is an intensive property because it does not depend on the amount of neon present in the lamp. It is a characteristic specific to neon atoms that remains constant regardless of the quantity of the substance.
