It depends on how and where you are driving it.
I own a 6 year old 1.6l petrol Toyota Corolla, commuting about 20 miles each way on roads that seem to pretty much match what is usually described as "combined" fuel cycle.
I get over 45 MPG, consistently. But I try not to go over the limit and slow down more graduallt, accelerate more graduallt, that sort of thing.
In town or driving more, erm, erratically (!) will reduce that.
The most popular and usually the most economical used Honda is usually the Honda Civic. Due to the facts that it has good gas mileage on the highway and around town, is relatively easy and cheap to fix, and gets good overall mileage, they are very popular as used cars.
A good used Toyota Camry with high mileage and a maintenance record.
Do the math 12k miles every year ......if the car is a 1999 Honda Civic SI then the average mileage should be 144K miles.......
As far as cost to own, Resale, Insurance, Dependability, Fuel Mileage, the Honda Civic is one of the best cars I have ever owned or worked on. Another good choice would be a good used Toyota Camry.
Average mileage on used scion car is 25000. They are good cars which are made by Toyota which actually owns this company and brand. Buy a scion for style and engine.
You might want to check for Toyota's and Honda's with mileage over 100,000 miles. These cars rate very high
Acura has a great reputation for being a good car. Acura is rated number 1 with Honda and Toyota and Lexus. Acura is made by Honda.

The Honda Civic gets good gas mileage and tends to be about $14,000 new. Of course, if you get it used you could get it cheaper than that. The gas mileage varies depending on year and whether you are driving in town or on the highway.
Honda Rav 4 is a god used SUV with good MPG and a high safety rating. You can read more at http://trucks.about.com/od/suvreviews/tp/best_gas_rating.htm The Saturn Vue is a great SUV that gets decent gas mileage and is also safe. Also look at the Toyota Rav-4 or Highlander.
Depends on what model and year Honda you are referring to. Honda & Toyota vehicles have higher resale values than most other models, and for a good reason. They are dependable vehicles. So when shopping for a caryou will pay more for a Honda. It is up to you to decide if Honda is worth the extra cost. IMO, they are.
Before buying a used Toyota, you should know if the car was involved in an accident. You should also know the mileage on the vehicle.
