News Reports differ from editorials, in my humble opinion, by including facts about a newsworthy event and opinions (possibly differing) from several to many different sources. Editorials may or may not have any facts listed in them, and usually include opinions from only one or very few people, all of whom agree with each other. A News Report shouldn't attempt to persuade people to believe one opinion over the others, and an Editorial's main purpose is to try to persuade people to believe one opinion over another or others.

For Example, after a situation where there is some graffiti and a scuffle between opposing groups of graffiti artists, followed by arrests of all persons involved for disturbing the peace and defacing property, a News Report would list what had happened and interview people from each side, try to interview the owner(s) of the defaced property, those whose peace was disturbed and who possibly called the police, and list what happened along with those differing opinions. At the same time, an editor might write an editorial about the dangers these hotheaded teens pose to the community, starting with graffiti and moving up to breaking and entering, etc. (which would be a stretch, but I'm having a little trouble thinking of a realistic example that has NO relation to any real situation I have recently read an editorial about). OR, the editorial might focus on how the reaction (to call police and arrest the teens involved) was overkill and surely the people involved could have solved the situation without sending promising potential art students to jail, etc., etc.

In other words, an editorial takes a stand about an issue that may be related to recent actual events; a news report tells what happened and what people are saying in response to what happened. Of course, the news report could either intentionally or unintentionally interview a group of people who all have the same agenda, in which case it would resemble an editorial more than normal.

News reports are objective accounts of current events, presenting facts and information. Editorials, on the other hand, are opinion pieces written by editors or columnists expressing their personal views or the views of the publication. Editorials are meant to persuade or influence readers, while news reports aim to inform.

A news report is a story about a person, event, or thing which is made up only of facts. An editorial however, is the sentiment or opinion of a publication or editor.
