He is known as the Luther Burbank of the Philippines. He was born in Angono, Rizal and studied at the College of Agriculture of the University of the Philippines. He was inspired by his father who was a farmer with the proverbial green thumb.
He enjoyed working on the farm and experimenting with new varieties of fruits and vegetables. He combined the sweetness of the Hawaiian pineapple and the Native Philippine Pina. He also contributed much to food production research.. His work included ten varieties of rust-resistant coffee, the ambosbanana, the Bornean tsempalak, the kepolescan, and the spice nutmeg. He died in Naguilian, La Union at the age of 93.

Nemesio Mendiola (1890-1983) is the country's counterpart of the American "plant wizzard," Luther Burbank. He was responsible in breeding high yielding rice, corn, sugar cane, and a host of horticultural crops, including fancy plants. Have you seen kamote (sweet potato) varieties with yellow, violet and blue tubers? He bred the spineless kenaf from the wild thorny native variety and became the source of fiber for commercial jute sacks.
