Artesian water is found in the basin. Although it is too salty for humans to drink, animals and livestock can drink it. It can also be used for watering crops, and thus it is a very important source of water for people living in the outback. Bores are sunk to reach the water and licenses are required for this. The water is then drawn up, sometimes hundreds of feet, by windmills.
Australia has hundreds of freshwater creeks and rivers. Water is piped from some of the rivers, while others are dammed. Rainwater is captured by way of watertanks in many places. There are also vast underground supplies of water, such as the Great Artesian Basin.

Artesian wells are found in many locations around the world. They occur when groundwater is confined between layers of impermeable rock, causing it to flow to the surface without the need for pumping. Specific examples of artesian wells include those in regions like France, Australia, and the United States.

The Great Basin Desert primarily is found in Nevada, Utah and California with small parts entering a few other states.
Nevada is covered by the largest portion of the Great Basin Desert but a big part is also found in Utah.
Where water is not found naturally in creeks and rivers, or as rainfall, farmers have to drill bores, going down hundreds of feet, to tap into underground water supplies (such as the Great Artesian Basin in Australia). The water is then brought to the surface via windmills. Water may also be diverted from rivers and dams into canals, which eventually feed into the farmers' paddocks. This is an inefficient way to get water, as much can be lost through evaporation.
