Jesus and his disciples used only the Hebrew Scriptures when they preached (the Greek "New Testament" had obviously not been written yet).

At 2 Timothy 3:16, the Apostle Paul, a sincere follower of Jesus, said

"ALL scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work".

ALL scripture would include the Hebrew Scriptures.

Without the Hebrew Scriptures, there would have been no way to recognize Messiah when he came. Jesus was recognized, by spiritually awake people, because he fulfilled the hundreds of prophecies about Messiah from the Hebrew Scriptures.(John 2:13-17, Psalms 69:9). And today, without the law code, history, and prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures, much in the Christian Greek Scriptures would be doubtful in meaning, (Lu 24:27, 44), since much of what was written way back in pre-Christian times, was written for us.

--"For all the things that were written aforetimewere written for our instruction." (Ro 15:4)

--"Now these things went on befalling them as examples, and they were written for a warning to us upon whom the ends of the systems of things have arrived." (1Co 10:11)

Here are just a few of the places where Jesus used the Hebrew scriptures:

Matthew 22:29, Matthew 5:17, Matthew 7:12, Matthew 22:40.

He spoke of Adam and Eve (Matthew 19:4-6) , Abel (Luke 11:48-51), Noah(Matthew 24:37-39), Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:29&30) using them as historical examples for OUR benefit.

In 1 Corinthians 14:21 Paul quoted from Isaiah 28:11.

The disciples referred to them constantly, some examples at: Acts 18:24, Romans 1:2, 2 Timothy 3:15, Hebrews 11:4

Though Christians are not under the Mosaic Law, which was set up to govern the Israelites, we are still expected to follow the principles on which it was based (Matthew 7:12, Romans 13:8-10, Matthew 22:34-40).

But the Hebrew Scriptures have MUCH more to offer than the Law...

There is no better place to learn about God and mankind's history with him. The Hebrew Scriptures contain our creation account, they tell us the reason we're here, why we die, who God is, why the world is such a mess, who Satan is, how to recognize the Messiah, WHY he had to die, when he would come , what he would do for mankind, what God's plan is for the earth and people on it, what our future holds, what God's Kingdom is, why Jesus told us to pray for it ...and SO Much more.

As Jesus said, quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3 "Man must live, not on bread alone, but on every utterance that comes forth from God's mouth". (Matthew 4:4)

Is it important for us to know the Hebrew scriptures to understand Jesus?

Jesus certainly came out of the Jewish milieu, so it ought to be helpful to know the Old Testament in order to understand Jesus better. Yet many Christians do not really know the Hebrew scriptures, but feel they do understand Jesus. Many believe that Isaiah 7:14 says that a virgin would conceive and bear a child, because the Gospel of Matthew relies on this as evidence that the virginity of Mary had been prophesied. Isaiah 7:14, in the original Hebrew, actually says, "the young woman", and the young woman in question did have a child a few verses later in Isaiah. The problem arose in Matthew's reliance on a mistranslation in the Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew scriptures.Others find in the Old Testament what they believe to be other prophecies and foreshadowments of events in the life of Jesus. These should be accepted without question, or examined, to find that in every case they are not really references to the life of Jesus. Thus it is probably better not to know the Hebrew scriptures too well, if you wish to believe that there are references to Jesus in the Old Testament. On one view, you will better understand the real Jesus if you know the Hebrew scriptures and realise that they do not really contain any references to Jesus.

Did Jesus use the Septuagint Bible?

The Bible as Christians recognize it today did not exist. Most of the Old Testament was a part of the Torah and as such Jesus would have been familiar with it. Jesus used the Bible as it existed in his time, both in the original Hebrew/Chaldean and in the Greek Septuagint translation, depending on his audience.

Originally Hebrew. Christianity came from Jesus who was Jewish. Most of the scriptures of the New Testament were initially inscribed in Hebrew and Aramaic, which are probably the languages that Jesus knew. But Christianity is not a nationality or race, it is a belief that crosses all boundries.

How many times did Jesus refer to the Old Testament?

The only scripture Jesus had, when he was here on earth, was the "Old Testament" (or the Hebrew Scriptures). There were no others. Jesus constantly referred to these Scriptures, quoting directly from or referring indirectly to over half of the books of the "Old Testament".(Matthew 5:5 from Psalm37:11,29)(Acts 3: 22, 23 from Deuteronomy 18:15, 18, 19)(Matthew 4:4; 21:13) By referring to "the Prophets," Jesus had in mind the prophetic books of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), which also contain all the prophecies concerning Jesus himself.
