There are two different answers depending on what someone is thanking you for. If someone is handing/ giving something to you the response should be bitte or bitte schön. If they are thanking you for doing something/ a favor, then the response is gern geschehen.

(The answer here before I changed it was Das tut mir leid. This is actually how you say "I'm sorry," not"you're welcome").

The word schön is added to Danke for emphasis. It also makes it sound a tad more polite and formal.

It's a bit like the difference between "Thanks" and "Thank you" in English.

Danke schoen means thank you. One can also say Danke sehr, Danke dir/euch (you singular/ you plural), Danke vielmals, vielen Dank or simply Danke.
