GCSEs are a selection of exams which is taken when the person is 14-16 (years 9, 10 & 11). It envolves a mixture coureswork and test papers. The student will choose which courses they take, although some courses are mandatory such as English Language and Maths.

I presume you mean GCSE, General Certificate of Secondary Education, a British public exam generally taken in year 11.

If you drop out of school after GCSE's, these will be your primary qualifications for any job. Even if you stay in school and take your A-Levels, they are extremely useful when applying to universities, because those are the first tests that they look at.
