4.0 GPA means a perfect average...like a 100. But if you take an AP class you can get up to a 5.0 GPA for that class. So a 4.8 GPA means that your grade average for all your classes is 4.8 out of 4, or 120%. It is only possible if you take AP.

At least that's what it means for highschool

I assume this 4.8 is based of the weighted 5.0 scale. So yes, it is a very good gpa, equalling a 3.7-3.9 on the 4 (regular) scale. When looking at gpa, colleges look for a few specific things, which include the level of classes, any improvement or consistency through the years, and a high score. A high score like 4.8/5.0 is difficult to achieve unless the student consistently scores well in high level classes since only AP/GT and Honors classes would give you this kind of value.

Depending on the scale (whether it is a 4.0 scale or a 5.0 scale), that is one of the highest GPAs you can earn.

A 5.4 gpa, if on a 6.0 scale, is a very good gpa.

It means that out of all classes, the average score is a 94/100.

Sounds like a joke to me. Grade inflation. I think this equates to a 2.7 in my day.
